Montreal Directed Retreats saw the light of day in 1973 as an informal gathering of priests and religious who had come together with the common vision of presenting silent, personalized retreats to lay people. Quite an avant garde idea at the time! What began very informally soon took shape as the directors faced the practical details of organizing and advertising retreats, as well as the need for continued formation for themselves and the recruitment of new directors, especially laypersons. Today, MDR is comprised almost exclusively of laypersons, all trained and skilled in the art of spiritual direction and eager to place their talents at the service of christians who seek to deepen their relationship with God through a weekend retreat. At our 25th anniversary celebration, Joan Foliot, CND, a founding member of MDR, entertained us with anecdotes of the early years, which may be read, unedited, here. |
